Make Safety Part of Your Winter Break Plans
As the semester wraps up and some Wolverine backpacks are traded for suitcases, the Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) wants to send warm wishes for a joyful—and safe—winter break. Whether you're heading home, traveling, or staying local, your safety and peace of mind matter. While you’re focused on finals and festive plans, don’t forget to secure your residence and personal belongings before leaving campus.
A few simple precautions now can help ensure you return to campus with everything just as you left it—safe and sound. See below for practical tips for a worry-free winter break!
Traveling Safely
- Plan your travel route in advance and share your itinerary with a friend or family member.
- Keep your phone charged; bring a backup power bank.
- Use well-lit, populated transportation hubs — whether rideshare, public transit, or campus shuttles.
- Trust your instincts: If something feels off, change your plan or seek help.
- Secure your luggage and keep important items (IDs, medications, electronics) in a carry-on.
Moving out or Temporary Relocation
- Lock your vehicle and never leave it unattended while loading.
- Move belongings during busy daytime hours.
- Label boxes clearly and keep a running checklist so nothing is left behind.
- Don't prop open exterior doors in residence halls or apartments.
- Use elevators and stairwells safely — keep pathways clear during moves.
- When hiring movers or helpers, confirm their identity and stay with your belongings.
- Dispose of trash and recycling properly to keep hallways and exits clear (fire safety).
Secure your residence
- Lock all doors and windows
- Close curtains and blinds
- Keep valuables out of sight
- Unplug electronics to reduce fire risk and save energy
- Use timers for interior & exterior lights
- Do not prop open exterior doors
- Pause mail delivery or entrust a friend to collect it for you
- Do not turn off your heat. Set the heat to 52° or higher to help prevent frozen pipes
- Be sure all garbage is gathered and removed from your residence
- Check the expiration dates on food and dispose of items that will expire over break
Securing Your Vehicle
- Avoid parking on the street – (If Ann Arbor declares a snow emergency while you’re away, your vehicle may be ticketed or towed)
- Remember to lock your car doors
- Ensure bikes are secured with a U-lock or stored indoors when possible
Personal Safety During Break
- Remain aware of your surroundings when in unfamiliar environments.
- Travel in groups or use buddy systems when possible.
- Keep emergency contacts updated in your phone.
- Practice digital safety: use strong passwords, log out of shared devices, and avoid public Wi-Fi for sensitive info.
- Celebrate responsibly: know your limits, have a plan to get home safely, and look out for friends.
- Trust your instincts — if you see something concerning, report it.
REMINDER: All undergraduate residence halls will be closed for winter break on December 17, 2025, at 7 p.m., and will reopen at noon on January 4, 2025.
Flying out? Check the Central Student Government’s AirBus, which offers transportation to Metro Airport and back to Ann Arbor. The Ride also provides public transit to and from Metro Airport.
As always, DPSS is available 24/7 and can be reached by calling (734) 763-1131.
Have a safe and relaxing winter break. We look forward to seeing you in the new year!
