MEDIA RELEASE: Stabbing Near Catherine Street and Zina Pitcher Place

ANN ARBOR, MI – September 18, 2025 – The University of Michigan Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) issued an emergency alert to the campus community at 6:20 p.m. following a stabbing near Catherine Street and Zina Pitcher Place.

According to initial information, an individual attempted to enter the construction site of the D. Dan and Betty Kahn Health Care Pavilion. After being denied entry, the suspect assaulted an individual. First responders remain on scene, and the University of Michigan Police Department is actively investigating the incident. Out of an abundance of caution, DPSS advises community members to continue avoiding the area until further notice.

Below is a photo of the suspect, which is also posted to the DPSS social media X account. Community members are asked to review the image carefully and call 734-763-1131 or visit the online reporting system at dpss.umich.edu with any information to assist the investigation. If you observe the suspect or have an urgent tip, call 911.

UPDATE: A final update message was issued at 10:52 pm. UMPD officers searched the area for the alleged suspect, 33-year-old Lagarien Thomas, but he was not located. The investigation is still ongoing. Officers will be in the area, and ask the public stay alert.

UPDATE 11:34 p.m.: The suspect has been arrested. There is no threat to the campus at this time. Investigation ongoing.

UPDATE 9/19/25 9:30 a.m.: Authorities are continuing their investigation, and the case will be submitted to the prosecutor’s office for review on potential charges of assault with intent to cause great bodily harm less than murder. An arraignment is anticipated this weekend.

Out of respect for the privacy of the victim, no additional information regarding their identity or condition will be released at this time.
